General Recommendations

pellet_cutThis feeding program should be considered as a guideline. This feed may be introduced as early as possible and may be fed beyond weaning according to the needs and desires of the foal.
Changes in the feeding schedule may be required according to foal’s health, growth and size. No more than 0.5lb of grain per 100lbs body weight should be fed (0.23kg/45kg body weight)

All diet changes should be gradual.

Wash hands before handling and feeding foal!

Foals should be fed 2-3 times minimum per day to avoid digestive upsets. Smaller meals more frequently are better for digestion and growth.
Good quality hay and water should be offered free choice from about 2-3 weeks of age

Monitor growth/weight regularly to confirm that foal is growing normally.
The following should be monitored to ensure good health in the foal: attitude, appetite, hydration, fecal output and consistency and growth rate

Foal should be bright, alert, playful and always hungry before they are fed
Consult your veterinarian for any signs of disease, fever, parasites, …

Foal-gro pellets can be used during the final 3 months of gestation depending on the condition of the mare when the fetus is developing at a fast rate and the nutrient requirements of the mare increase accordingly. Do not allow the mare to become fat.

Foal-gro pellets can be used during lactation when energy requirements of the mare are very high, if not enough energy is provided the mare will start to use up her reserves and lose weight. Do not allow the mare to start gaining weight.
